2019-08-10 08:00:00 2019-08-10 08:00:00 America/New_York Trails to Sweets Get yourself to Purcellville and join me on one of my favorite rides. You'll ride in three states, cross the Potomac river twice and the Shenandoah once, see tourists eating ice cream in historic Harper's Ferry, stop for a snack in lovely Shepherdstown, ride alongside (but not on) the C&O Canal towpath, come really close to John Brown's farmhouse (which I'll one day get around to detouring to, but not this time). There will be hard climbs, thrilling descents, wineries, cows, chicken farms, maybe a peacock, and more! As an extra bonus, we appear to be at much lower risk of heat stroke or violent thunderstorms than on some previous outings on this route. If it sounds like too much fun there is a bailout option from Harper's Ferry that cuts the ride to 45 miles and eliminates about half the climbing. Our first official rest stop is in Shepherdstown at mile 36.8 so plan accordingly. If you need to stop sooner there is a 7-11 in Bolivar around mile 22, right after we go through Harper's Ferry. The ride start is listed as Trail's End Cycling, which doesn't exist anymore. We'll start in the Purcellville municipal lot/W&OD trail parking at 120 N. 23rd St., which is across the street from the building where Trail's End used to be. I don't know if the restrooms at the trailhead will be open that early, so if you want to be sure of a toilet, stop somewhere on your way through Purcellville. The weather forecast looks good but if it turns bad I will post a cancellation decision by 6am on Saturday. If you're going to download the cue sheet or GPS route, wait until Friday in case there are any last-minute route changes. I will be riding at a Bish pace. Faster riders welcome to come and self-lead. Get in touch if you have questions. Trails End Cycling (TEC)
